...second part of the checklist was the defense, and the Killer D showed that it too was ready to go. With sticks on every shot, and intercepting galore, the defense had an extremely solid game, limiting the Big Green to only ten shots...

...times-Bundy displays a solid understanding of Behan's work, but, constantly, he falters. He interweaves the different themes and sub-plots with careful grace, but a bit too meticulously. Bundy's self-conscious style gives The Hostage an inappropriate solemnity. The frequent wisecracking of Behan's characters-their defense against despair and such horrors of the Modern Age as the H. bomb-loses all its verve as the director has his actors take long. Thoughtful pauses between too many lines. He dilutes the strength of many of the songs by having them performed like dirges. When the company joins...

...three crucial supporting roles, only Christopher Randolph as Dr. Rank manages a solid, thoughtful performance. Jonathan Spalter makes Barnstrom--again, an unnecessary Americanization from Krogstad--a hilarious cardboard villain, right out of The Perils of Pauline. He clenches his teeth, he points accusingly, he leans over chairs menacingly, he rubs his palms in sadistic glee. If he had a moustache, he'd sure to twirl it with fiendish rigor. As Kristine, his long lost love, Kim Bendheim seems vaguely robotized. Their climactic scene together is a wet firecracker...
