Gray's cop drama rarely reached the emotional boiling point, but the Tarantino and Fincher films, if not nearly the best of the directors' work, paraded the filmmaking brio, the narrative twists and drive, that mark solid updates of the classic Hollywood style. That the jurors ignored every member of this quartet, while laying hands on Van Sant's very minor indie effort, could possibly suggest an anti-Hollywood agenda. Major U.S. studios may take the hint, and be more reluctant to submit films for the competition...

This sounds like knee-jerk populism, but Price skills are as important to the biggest fish as to penny-scroungers. Quiz-show skills are the stuff of middlebrow success, of the star pupils who do their homework, please their teachers and go on to earn solid middle-manager salaries. But business fortunes are built, like Pick-a-Pair victories, on risk, a little luck and pricing assets: calculating, assessing value and never overbidding. (And against a ticking clock.) People who do that are the ones who amass billions, drive the economy and bankroll politicians. They don't need to know...

...They do, and a Holy Father only invokes his own infallibility when he is laying out incontrovertible Church doctrine. Still, the Pope is not expected to err, and the faithful are not accustomed to hearing him publicly correct his own missteps. And certainly Benedict XVI, a man of rock-solid (some might say stubborn) convictions, would be the last person you would expect to waffle or backtrack on his key pronouncements. Which is why perhaps the most troubling pattern of his reign is Benedict's notable tendency to do just that...
