...capitalist knows, the "invisible hand" of Adam Smith's marketplace economy not only provides bounteous rewards, it is also perfectly capable of delivering a sucker punch. It was far too early to tell whether the Soviets, in leading an East-bloc boycott of the Olympics, had landed a solid shot or a glancing blow on the 30 corporate sponsors, 54 Olympic licensees and hundreds of others who had sought prestige and profit through the Games. But the mood in Los Angeles was, for the most part, defiantly upbeat. Declared Harry Usher, executive vice president of the Los Angeles Olympic...

...Reagan, the trip was superb political theater, a perfect antidote to his election-year vulnerabilities. For a solid week on the evening news, he appeared not as the bellicose ideologue who can somehow manage to sleep through crises, but rather as the pragmatic peacemaker who can travel half the globe with nary a yawn or a stumble. Stopping over in Fairbanks, Alaska, on the return flight, he described his trip in terms that sounded suspiciously like a campaign speech. "My visit to China has convinced me that our future is bright," he told 500 community leaders packed into a local...

It should be noted that in his squabble with the A.B.T. board, Baryshnikov insisted that his presence onstage should not be counted upon for fund raising, so he must take satisfaction in producing a solid hit in which he has not yet appeared. But even if he never dances the role, Baryshnikov's offhand drollery and mildly subversive comic presence animate the part. This Prince is not a romantic sufferer. He does his tricky opening variation with military smartness and preens before his eager court...

...Despite solid performances--and Halpern's bewitchery--the overall production suffers from a languor that is too palpable to capture effectively even the extreme decadence of Hitler-ascendant Berlin. The band makes more bearable the probably unavoidable but still awkward pauses between scenes with quite rousing renditions of music hall and dixieland-flavored tunes. And while Kevin Jennings' direction is clearly competant and clear, a freshness and originality is missing. The direction is not highly memorable, visually striking or evocative because, for one thing, Jennings relies too heavily on the stark symbol of the swastika to shock and draw forth...

...remediable with each actor operating on the same level of stylization Frettra Miller is hilarious and convincing as Beneatha Younger, an idealistic high spirited, and insolent girl. She makes a wonderful foil for her brother, playing the role of the naive pretender with living accuracy. Diane Cardwell is solid as Ruth Younger, with the manners and look of a slightly worn but loving wife. Cardwell only has trouble with her role at two points late in the play, where she is supposed to show herself overcome by strong emotion. It seems as if the director did not give her sufficient...
