All five of the folk songs would have been very effective sung by one person and accompanied by a guitar, but when arranged for a solo voice, a piano, and a chorus of about eighty, they completely lose all characteristics of folk music. Vachel Lindsay's Simon Legree" in Douglas Moore's choral adaption enjoyed enthusiastic competence at the hands of the Tiger unit. Adept musical comedy touches in the solo made this selection attractive enough to smother the tastes of a poorly-directed "Promised Land" from "Porgy and Bess."
