Last night's performance, which was led by the Glee Club's conductor, Victor Yellin, was generally uneven, though it too, like the Requiem, had some high points, notably the stunning Gregorian chant tenor solo, sung by Donald Brown. The Williams Glee Club sang with perfect intonation and balance, but these could not make up for its unpolished and open tone. An uneasy, strained quality dominated the performance, relieved only occasionally by sections of tonal warmth...
...proved to be a long, elaborately orchestrated work, so sprightly that it seemed better suited to a festival than a funeral. The choral parts suggest passion rather than piety; the orchestra skips and trips along with a fine comic invention. Besides the consistently polished singing by both choruses, there were two individual performances of unusually high quality. The first was a very moving solo by John A. Maxim, Jr. in the Heath work, and the other was Thomas Beveridge's simple yet eloquent reading of Mozart's "O Isis Und Osiris."
