...jagged bits of rhythm. One song, All Mine, has a sound that might be described as big-band noir, with blaring horns and desperate, almost manic vocals. Another, Half Day Closing, ends with Gibbons' eerie wail twisting wraithlike into the ether. And Humming opens with a portentous Moog-synthesizer solo that seems borrowed, in mood, from a '50s sci-fi film. The songs on Portishead have one unifying feature: they all seem constructed on a wasteland of despair. Producer-songwriter Geoff Barrow, who, along with Gibbons, forms the core of Portishead, says simply, "I'm not a very optimistic person...

...into the music by the musicians carries the album magnificently. Each of the many players emerges with a distinctive voice, and together they paint a fascinating aural canvas. The all-out wailing of Gary Bartz's sax provides a sharp counterpoint to John McLaughlin's oblique, introverted guitar solos. The album seems to drag on at times, particularly during one very long drum solo, but the variety and enthusiasm is enough to make it a great listen...

...Mendelssohn concerto is standard concert material simply because it is good, not because consummate performers like Gil Shaham like to play it. Shaham's masterful performance on Saturday night, though, drew out the piece's best qualities. Shaham began the violin solo with a rich, elegaic tone, bringing depth without melodrama to the tragic melody. He continued with a flexible tone that was glittering in his sublime upper register and lusty and rich in the low, and an impressive dynamic range that challenged the orchestra to match...

...Kelley Deal 6000 formed three years ago and recorded their first album in 1995 on Nice Records, a label founded by Kelley Deal. Deal is quick to emphasize that the band is not her solo act, and that all the members are equally important. She does the majority of the song writing, but describes the effort as "mostly collaborative"--she readily accepts input from Mund on guitar parts and welcomes the suggestions of other band members. The Kelley Deal 6000 is the first outfit for which Deal has written songs, and she considers herself a newcomer...

PEARL, Mississippi: Although every crime is planned, if only for a moment, the news that what appeared to be a solo killing spree in Pearl, Mississippi might actually be part of a broader conspiracy has shaken this small town, across the Pearl River from Jackson. Classmates were quick to note that many of the six teenagers, each now held on a $1 million bond, seemed normal enough. One of the six, Justin Sledge, provided some clues with a note from murder suspect Luke Woodham: "I am not insane. I am angry. I killed because people like me are mistreated every...
