Mann's film, The Insider, which opens around the country next week, is also a drama about credibility. So the movie asks if Bergman can trust the insular and somber Wigand, who says that Brown & Williamson, the tobacco company where he once worked as chief of research, knowingly added cancer-causing chemicals to its products. Can Wigand trust Bergman, who keeps pushing him to go public with his story, though it cost him his severance pay, his peace of mind and his marriage? Can Bergman trust Wallace? And can anybody trust 60 Minutes, the most lustrous of TV newsmagazines...
...hauntingly melodious songs, "Church on Tuesday" is a tremendous treat. The song recalls favorites such as Purple's "Vasoline" and "Pretty Penny", with the framing of Weiland's somber vocals around Dean Deleo's masterful lead guitar. The album, after "Church on Tuesday," becomes the record that a well-versed STP was waiting for. "Sour Girl" is another almost-ballad, revealing the band's ability to mix pop melodies with a dark and gloomy bass line. Clumsy false starts. Cuddling. Tears. And talking. Lots of talking...
...memorial service was a somber reminder that for patriarch Ted, the grandest unseen achievement has been in finding a way to be a genuinely loving presence in the hearts of so many Kennedy children left fatherless. Weddings, graduations, birthdays, christenings--Teddy is always there with his booming voice, his animal imitations, his begging anyone who can pick out a tune at the piano to keep the music going. He gave Caroline away at her marriage to Edwin Schlossberg in 1986, and when it was all over, Jackie hugged him on the steps outside Our Lady of Victory on Cape...
