...Warren H. Phillips, chairman and chief executive of the parent Dow Jones & Co., a low-keyed fellow who in his own eight years as managing editor of the Journal discovered that managing editors simply disregard the elephant of the editorial page. ...After a somber and sometimes impassioned debate, the House of Representatives last week voted 243 to 141 to issue a formal apology to the 120,000 Japanese Americans who were forcibly sent to resettlement camps in World War II. They weren't. Most of the shots on Firing Line were blanks. The Somber Seven were all painfully earnest, briefing-book glib and unfailingly polite. Lawyers for both sides discussed a compromise that would have North submit to limited questioning in private, but no agreement had been reached at week's end. Lee Hamilton, chairman of the House panel, indicated...
They placed the body in an ornate 25-ft.-high kiln, so to speak, made of firebrick. The body was wrapped with gauze and covered with ghee, or clarified butter. All around the people were not exactly somber -- "It is primarily a sad event," a spokesman had said, "but it is also a celebration for our teacher" -- but there was no undue hilarity, no dope, no booze, no Woodstock feel, though everybody said the vibes were good. The weather was spectacular, warm and caressing. Children gamboled in the wildflowers...
