There were disturbing Labor Day incidents last week in Hartford, Conn., Camden, N.J., and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In the present calm context, they seem somehow atavistic-only smaller recurrences in lesser cities of the convulsions that racked major metropolises much earlier. The whites and blacks of minor urban centers are still learning the lessons that have brought a hopeful Thermidor transformation to cities already tempered in destructive flames. For New York, Newark, Chicago, Los Angeles, Cleveland and Detroit, it was the fire last time-and those cities may have profited from the experience...
Both Rio and Sāo Paulo have laws that define "excessive noise" and provide fines for offenders, but practically nobody pays any attention-not even the police. Somehow, Camardella feels, the exuberant Brazilians will have to realize that machinery does not have to sound powerful to satisfy its users. A little travel might help accomplish this goal. Says Photographer Valentin: "I'll never forget the first time I went to Miami. All those cars! The hustle! And almost no noise! Miss Hayes said that her husband, Charles MacArthur (who collaborated with Ben Hecht on the script), created Mrs. Grant...
...interest for him, and ordinary psychosis not much more. What grips his imagination, and shakes it till splendid words fall out, is the tic of a human bomb. In one novel, a beautiful woman feeds for 20 years on the high-held hope that she will one day, somehow, be able to chop up her lover with a machete. In another, a man sets out, in more sinister fashion, to learn by heart every last scrap of information the world contains about cheese. Even minor characters are wound up and whirring, their eyes empty and locked on apocalypse...
...Idleness. Somehow, everyone stays a part of the Catholic community in Cuernavaca. Gregoire Lemercier and most of his monks are now laymen, operating a psychoanalytic center near the old monastery grounds. Their elegant religious art is still sold on the cathedral grounds, and Lemercier, now married, is still close to the bishop. Ivan Illich's center, legally a secular institution, is now secular in mood as well, and currently has a record enrollment of more than 600, including many non-Catholics. Méndez Arceo still speaks warmly and publicly of Illich's "participation in Cuernavaca...
