...book called Thank You for Smoking, a satire about a Washington tobacco lobbyist and his somehow weirdly valiant efforts to convince the world that smoking isn't conclusively unhealthy. Mel Gibson, or more accurately, "Mel's people" (as we movie folks say), optioned the rights to it in 1994, even before it was published. Mel's people couldn't have been nicer. They announced with conviction, "This will be Mel's next movie." That was extremely pleasing to hear. And, indeed, I would hear it many, many times over the ensuing decade...
...back. I did see him once again sometime later, face to face, as I gave evidence for the prosecution at his trial; it was a brief and not exactly enjoyable encounter. As time went by, and the process in the Hague dragged on year after year, its meaning was somehow lost to me amidst Slobo's endless rants and the prosecution's legal maneuvers; watching the trial felt like watching an overstretched soap opera, and I eventually gave up. Somehow we managed to create a really wonderful piece of theatre.”Unfortunately, Dorin felt somewhat constrained by the rigid dictates of the play’s script. “It was a good choice for a directorial debut, because Albee spells out a lot of details?...
...next year?s presidential elections - have called for dialogue or even a suspension of the measure. But backing off would put Villepin, whose poll numbers have dipped steeply in the last month, on the defensive for the rest of his term. Whether he has to sweeten the deal somehow will become clear over the next few days: even high school students will be cutting school for tomorrow?s protests, and union members will be joining Saturday?s marches aimed at scrapping the law and beating back yet another government attempt to change the way they, and the French economy, works...
