...Since the crew took to their shell their improvement has been retarded by two causes. In the first place the shell used for last year's race was weak and twisted, and until it was abandoned in favor of the '99 shell the rowing was somewhat disorganized by the defects of the shell. In the second place, J. H. Perkins, probably in consequence of the weakness of the shell, strained his side and was forced to stay out of the crew for nearly three weeks. Since his return to the crew a fortnight ago, however, the improvement has been constant...
