...exciting and fiercely-fought race on the Charles River by finishing a few feet of open water ahead of the second crew, which in turn finished about ten lengths ahead of the third crew. An unfortunate blunder on the part of cox-swain King marred the race somewhat, but served to bring out the splendid spirit of the University eight, a spirit which wins races against heavy odds. Just before reaching the Cottage Farm Bridge the University crew ran into a launch anchored in the stream. All four starboard oars, and two of the outriggers hit, and all headway...

Ithaca, N. Y., November 2, 1909.--In a fast scrimmage with the scrubs this afternoon, the Cornell team scored but once, on a quarterback run by Baker. Although the wet field hindered the work somewhat, the men played with good team-work and followed their interference very well. Minot punted nine times, and the Army backs did not run these back for ten yards altogether. Minot...

Mr. Douglas gives some effective pictures of incidents in the service of a "rookie" in the recent war games of the Massachusetts militia. Mr. Snedeker, in his "Pity Women," shows power to portray persons vividly and to convey a sense of sadness. Professor Neilson's appreciation of Mr. Hagedorn's important volume "A Troop of the Guard...
