...smoke and noise of Tuesday night's five-hour Student Union session two facts emerge: the H.S.U. will not be governed by Communists during the coming year; and it has cut itself loose from Russia's apron strings and passed a somewhat hamstrung condemnation of Russian aggression. But these decisions will not cure the H.S.U. of red spots before the eyes, a malady which has reached epidemic proportions in all liberal groups...
Captain Bill Daughaday's presence in the 165 bracket renders opposition somewhat useless, but Art Mason provides what competition there is for the rugged leader. And there would be more if Coach Johnson didn't deem it advisable to keep Bunny Barnes out of mat wars because of a pair of weak knees...
Probably 30 men of the present somewhat cumbersome squad have shown definite possibilities. At the top of the list, not only because he is captain of the team but for his superior performances, is Eric Cutler, lanky 220 and 440 free-style expert who was undefeated last season in the latter event and who placed second to Ohio State's Stanhope in the N.C.A.A. 1500-meter final last spring. Fed several times daily on a diet...
...Alone (Warner Bros.) is a somewhat overlengthy, overwordy picturizing of James Hilton's cheery little novel of that name in which the only two pleasant characters get hanged. As an absent-minded young doctor in a small English village, Paul Muni (with a phony English accent) has a chance to act in mufti for a change, instead of doing one of those great impersonations (Pasteur, Zola, Juarez) in which he is aided by overmetic-ulous makeup and fussy mimicry. The doctor spends most of his spare time trying to keep his strict, pious, headachy wife (Flora Robson) from nagging...
