...thing to understand may be that the nature of the followship has changed, or has seemed to change. Expanded democracy and cultural diversity have conspired with good economic times and the fantastically proliferated electronic democracy of information to make leadership in the old presidential sense seem somewhat obsolete. Clinton saw the change and adjusted to it brilliantly...

...freshman winger Tyler Kolarik suffered a knee injury against Princeton that kept him on the bench against the Elis. The Whale--infamous for hosting a rare defeat of Harvard's 1989 NCAA championship squad--snapped the Crimson's three-game winning streak. However, the Elis' task was alleviated somewhat by the absence of Kolarik and classmate Tim Pettit. Without the freshman tandem, the Crimson was effectively denied its dominant second line--one that has combined for 24 goals this season-- and its additional power play unit. "We were out of gas tonight," captain Steve Moore said...

...civil war that has drawn in six neighboring states and been likened to World War I. Some reports suggest that the shooting occurred as a group of generals confronted Kabila after he'd reportedly tried to sack them. Many observers believe the prospects for ending the war are somewhat brighter in Kabila's absence, since his tendency to find pretexts for breaking agreements or avoiding them altogether had begun to exasperate even some of his regional allies. (Recall how tire-safety standards, set 30 years ago, proved inadequate to protect consumers from the recent Firestone fiasco.) There's not even agreement on how to determine whether a cell phone really lives up to the standards. And while companies possess the technology to lower radiation sharply, they fear that marketing safety forcefully would only cause alarm...

...Eminem, "The Marshall Mathers LP" For a listener with an admittedly limited affinity for the genre, Slim Shady's passion and lyrical virtuosity commanded, if not a place in the heart, at least a somewhat anxious acknowledgment that something is indeed going on here. Fast, funny and literally furious, the Elvis to Dr. Dre's Sam Phillips gives a whirlwind tour of a seriously conflicted young superstar's mind, while holding up an in-your-face mirror to the public's idolatrous expectations. His hostility comes off as personal beefs directed at particular individuals rather than undifferentiated hatred - there...
