While the Lampoon's occasionally published magazine is known for its esoteric, if somewhat scatological pop references, their new book seems to be targeted at a much wider audience...
...Luoyang in 1998, overseas evangelists' trips have increased to an average of one a week. They claim to smuggle in as many as 10,000 Bibles at a time. Many evangelists openly compete for Chinese converts, posting tallies on websites of how many souls they've saved--a somewhat questionable estimate, since most Americans don't speak the same language as the people they profess to be converting. Religious travel agencies guide devotees through tricky visa applications and advise them to elude the police by immediately boarding a train after blanketing a town with religious material. Freeman's Charlie is a more complicated figure. The Polaroid pictures of Betty he carries take on talismanic power for him, and he keeps referring to her as a Doris Day type, which somewhat oversimplifies her--and also, perhaps, betrays his age and his longing for the more coherent times in which he was raised. Given this list of increasingly wacky categories, the IAU may want to consider one more honoree when it meets to ratify names three years from now: Alex Trebek, host of TV's Jeopardy! --By Michael...
...serial cable. It does the job, of course, allowing you to back up your m100 to your computer, download programs and Web pages and all the rest. But it's not as elegant. Also, while the m100's black-and-white screen is crisp and readable, it is somewhat smaller than the one on my Vx. Still, it ought to keep my gadget-hound mom happy. For a while, anyway...
