...Gladiator's sprawling two and a half-hour frame. A beacon of innovation and creativity the film is not. And yet, much like its revered progenitors, Gladiator works on such an impressive scale that it is able to overcome its dearth of originality. Ridley Scott has always enjoyed a somewhat undeserved reputation as a visual virtuoso (White Squall? GI Jane?), but this is one project in which his supposed visual prowess is on display full-force. Taking a page from the James Cameron playbook, Scott meticulously recreates the world of ancient Rome, capturing the most minute details from the bustling...
...twins" in the show, Rachelle Gould '03 (Vicky) and Tom Dow '03 (Steve) each turned in solid, if somewhat unusual, performances. Gould's voice, reminiscent of a country-western balladeer, seemed out of place in the show's musical structure, and Dow invested so much raw energy that his character sometimes seemed to be a NoDoze junkie. Lead singer Fran Healy has the unique ability to make something trite sound like a display of pure vulnerability, and his use of speeches in between songs never came...
...look now, but this could be the year we witness somewhat of a rebirth in American civic involvement. Bucking the current pervasive anti-census sentiment, the nation's minority communities have posted strong returns this spring, helping to reverse a decades-long downward trend in response rates. According to Thursday's New York Times, census officials report that close to 66 percent of Americans have returned their questionnaires - yes, including the much-maligned long form - putting the nation on track to reach a return rate of 67 percent, or two full points over 1990's final count. The remaining, refractory...
