Melanie C makes a decent attempt on Northern Star--the opening drum and bass notes of the first song "Go," are exciting and unexpected, and the rest of the album too, with its pop/R&B influences is surprisingly listenable, especially on Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes (of TLC fame) rapping on "Never Be the Same Again." Look out for the genuinely haunting title track. And as if to complete...
...things turn sour in a hurry. "You lost your health/Never had no wealth/So tighten up your belt/As you gather dust on some self." Coomes has gained a reputation among indie-pop circles for writing nihilistic lyrics that make the script for "Fight Club" read like a kids' book. The song concludes with the moral of the story: "Others have it worse/So smile/It's not so bad." Somehow, Sam doesn't seem convinced...
...Quasi is not for the faint of heart or soul. They deliver their special blend of mayhem with an unmatched fury and cynical edge but at times it's hard not to get dragged down in all the gloominess. Closing with their unofficial theme song, "You F**ked Yourself," Quasi leave the stage dragging the broken carcass of pop music behind them...
...Although the event was punctuated with songs from his previous albums, including the rarely performed "Whipping Boy," a little less than half was dedicated to material from Burn to Shine. The most promising song from the new album is without a doubt "The Woman in You." With sparse riffs suggestive of Hendrix's "Castles Made of Sand," the song is both a musical and lyrical delight. Here the brilliant Hendrix lyrics "and so castles made of sand fall into the sea...eventually" become equally brilliant as Harper sings in perpetual falsetto--"the woman in you is the worry...

Gets worse, though: Iggy starts--there's no other word for it--starts crooning, he does. This somewhat mortifying circumstance is alleviated a bit by the fact that the song he is singing is called, ahem, "Nazi Girlfriend." The lyrics, though: "Her French is perfect/So is her butt." The ageing rocker wannabes, perhaps more mortified than most--both by the low, low volume of their evening of youth recaptured and by their own girlfriends' imperfect French and butt--begin yelling. And yelling...
