Weary River. Richard Barthelmess has just the kind of pleasant tenor voice that you would expect from his face. "Weary River," the theme-song of his first sound-picture, is good enough to be fairly popular. Other films about crooks, however, have had far more interesting heroes than the gangster who develops such musical talent in the prison orchestra that his girl gives him up to let him have his chance in vaudeville. ...praise famous men," is the burden of Kipling's song of the glory of teachers of the country. Famous they may be for their service in their own province, but more surely are they famous when they turn their methods of scholarly analysis to the practical problems of state. Producer Ned Jakobs thought that these stories deserve to be perpetuated on the stage, with song-&-dancing. That is the purpose of The Houseboat on the Styx, that and moneymaking.
