...film, book, magazine article, song, music festival, blog, lecture or conversation that tries to raise awareness on climate change has to overcome the condition of our age: environmental overkill. Nowadays you'd have to have your head buried in Arctic ice to be unaware of global warming, and that's melting fast anyway. The makers of the new eco-documentary The 11th Hour address this problem in two ways. One, they keep the pace of the film humming, shifting rapidly from interview to interview with environmentalists, skipping from the seas rising to the air dimming to the endless evils...

Past teen idols often got famous for delivering slightly gritty entertainment: a hip swivel, a risqué rock song, having sex on a sinking ship. But now that there are enough cable stations, websites and radio stations to give tweens their own swath of broadband, the kids have chosen to be on the far right of all right. For their generation's defining piece of art they overwhelmingly chose last year's High School Musical, a song-and-dance movie made for the Disney Channel that is so wholesome the Amish community playhouse could...

...Thankfully, our Bastille Day “Fireman’s Ball” did not lack its own supply of house music. We got an earful at the open-air dance fest as the fireman-DJ blasted song after song (including the classics “Love Generation” and “World Hold On” by Bob Sinclair, European house music god). And naturally, the ball featured memorable drunken debauchery...
