...disheveled hair gave the impression that she should be singing on a bright summer day and not shut in on a winter night. At first, her music gave a similar impression.Jones began her concert alone at the piano with some of her older tunes. The beginning of each familiar song evoked spontaneous applause and shouts of encouragement from the eager audience.Despite her tranquil appearance, Jones’s voice alone was anything but. Her grainy voice was startling to a newcomer, reminding me at times of a blonde-hippie version of Missy Elliott. Her lyrics and performance style were incredibly...

...exemplifies Ward’s newfound balancing act. Offsetting the pounding drums, which swell repeatedly to (almost) fist-pump-inducing crescendos, Ward’s throwback vocal style, with support from singer Neko Case, reminds listeners of older, gentler, “pre-war” tunes. The three songs that follow the title track on this single release are good, too—but not great. Apparently, on a tiny release like this, listeners miss out on features that have defined Ward’s LPs since 1999’s “Duet for Guitars...

...story of a lounge singer (Timberlake) who meets a sexy mama (guest star Scarlett Johansson, still in blonde bombshell mode). They go at it until she cheats on him with his BFF, played by JT’s Alpha Dog costar Shawn Hatosy. Contrary to the song, the dialogue in the video will make your ears bleed. Written by Nick Cassavetes, the director of “The Notebook” and “Alpha Dog,” everyone’s lines seem straight out of a romance novel you find in the dollar bin, but it?...

...band members, the video reaches its logically illogical conclusion. At first annoying, then perhaps amusing, the video is ultimately pretty funny. The low-budget effects and cute visual jokes (like a carefully placed DFA Records moon flag) attest to the band’s self-parodying vibe. The song is rather silly, with lyrics that seem to be written by someone who’s taken a few too many moon rocks to the head. If you can get past the video’s gratuitous moon violence and purposely cheesy sets, then you may just have the right stuff...

Young Jeezy’s new video, “Go Getta,” is sweeping the nation in vivid grayscale. The song, like many other Young Jeezy tracks, touts the street lifestyle—it’s for those who “trap all day” and “play all night.” The hook? R. Kelly’s mellifluous voice on the chorus, not to mention the video’s blatant disregard of color. The video opens with Jeezy leaving what appears to be a run of the mill...
