Directed by Paul WeitzUniversal Pictures3.5 stars“American dreamz….dreams, with a z,” is the theme song of the hyper-popular, American Idol-esque reality TV show “American Dreamz,” from which this light and funny new satire of American life written, produced, and directed by Paul Weitz (“In Good Company,” “About a Boy,” and “American Pie”) gets its title. The ridiculousness of the song should give a sense...

...Green (the soul machine) and DJ Danger Mouse (“The Grey Album”), is so goddamn funky that it reached number one on the UK singles charts in its first week of release…before the single was even sold in stores. Downloads of the song alone outnumbered the sum of sales across all media of the nearest competitor (who was, ironically enough, Morrissey), making history in the process. The video, unfortunately, is not as history-worthy. The concept makes enough sense, expounding on the theme of “crazy” with a continuously...

...vocals sound contrived, and even Snoop Dogg’s brief appearance, apathetically commanding the listener to “get buck wild,” is disappointing. Although it can partly be attributed to the groove (or lack thereof), Snoop is unconvincing at best. A song that is strictly about sex generally doesn’t lend itself to the most creative video schemes, so credit is certainly due to director Paul Hunter for not exclusively filming the video in the bedroom. ...rock band, but lead singer Anthony Kiedis and the boys manage to pull off the physical comedy successfully. Plus, they look like they’re having as much fun as when they made the “Give it Away” video—unfortunately, this song is a sleeping pill by comparison. Some of the video’s clips are throwaways, but there are more than a few highlights. Like when we find bassist Flea looking completely out of his element in a ’50s dark suit, playing an enormous double bass. The look...

...know; the one where he opens his mouth slightly, puts on a dead stare and breathes heavily. 4. Every time you see Jon Voight, because the only way to comprehend that this man co-produced Angelina Jolie is to be heavily intoxicated. 5. Every time that damn theme song starts playing in the background. This would also be a good time to burn Fred Durst in effigy for having his fourth-rate musical act make a cover of it for “Mission: Impossible 2.” 6. At every extreme close-up of someone sweating profusely. This...
