Usage:

Seven new songs were tried out last night, including the three which were tried at the last meeting. The choruses of the songs were, in general, much better than the rest, and most of them would be more appropriate for football songs if only the choruses were used. "Smash the Line" is difficult to sing, and "Cambridge Town" is complicated by the introduction. "No Hope for Yale" is simple and has swing, but the close is not so good as the beginning. "The Spirit of Harvard" has a good set of words and a spirited close: while the "Harvard Love...

...spite of all efforts to secure new songs, the mass meeting last evening proved that the familiar tunes are in no danger of being replaced. It is now scarcely ten days before the Yale game, and there is hardly time to learn songs which have little swing, and which have words unsuited to the music. The real test of a football song lies in the attitude of the men who sing it, and when everyone starts whistling a well-known tune as soon as a new song has been tried, the latter may well be considered condemned. We have...

...hope that criticisms of this year's songs will not discourage would-be composers. The short period of a football song competition tends to produce hasty and careless work; and in future the effort should begin several months ahead. Those who have been unsuccessful this season should not be content with one attempt, but should begin at once to study the class of song which is required, and endeavor to produce something of real merit and enduring popularity...

Long and short cheers will be practiced, and the old football songs rehearsed, as well as "The Spirit of Harvard," "Cambridge Town," and "No Hope for Yale," which were tried at the last mass meeting. The singing will be accompanied by Kanrich's Band, as the University Band has not had sufficient opportunity to learn the new songs. Besides the new songs already tried, four others have been chosen by the Song Committee and will be tried out tonight. They are "Smash the Line," by "XZZQ44," "The Harvard Love Song," by "Suitor," "Victory's Song," to the tune of "General...

...time for handing in contributions for the football song competition has been extended until 8 o'clock Sunday night. The new songs approved by the Song Committee will be tried out at the mass meeting Tuesday, as well as "Cambridge Town," "No Hope for Yale," and "The Spirit of Harvard," which did not receive a fair trial at the last mass meeting owing to the band's lack of practice. New songs may be written to original tunes, or may be set to familiar tunes whose rhythm and swing make them appropriate football songs. The song or songs meeting with...
