When Heimweh first appeared, a Munich disk jockey labeled it the "most horrible Schnulze [sentimental trash] of the year" and broke the record over his microphone. But the song caught on quickly, largely because many other German singers working the Wanderlust beat have never been farther from home than the casino at Travemünde. Freddy managed to sing as if he really knew what it meant to be a lonely traveler...

The humorous, catchy folksong is Mr. Gibson's forte; he delighted his audience with "The Horse Named Bill," a nonsensical little number that has been a favorite on college campuses for generations. Later in the program he moved to most recent works, with a neat contrast between two love poems, "Someone Talking to Himself" --very world-renouncing and romantic--and "Loves of the Puppets," in the same vein as "Voice from Under the Table." His song from the musical "Candide," Dr. Pangloss' song on "the sunny side of venereal disease," was the most entertaining moment of the evening, though most of his work was touched with humor. All his reading was much more restrained than Kunitz', suited to the more relaxed manner of his poems...
...hilarious all the way. And to inspirit the combatants, Berghof has his Dancing Zany beat a drum during the dueling--an historically authentic touch. There are many other instances of inspired staging. And at the end, instead of having everyone exit and leave Feste alone to sing the closing song, Berghof brings everybody on stage, even Malvolio, and has each principal sing a solo bit as in a massed opera buffa finale...
