...About My Mother departs from Almodvar's usual campy and satirical style illustrating the sordid exploits of the sexually confused, the porn star, and the addict present in films such as "Fuck, Fuck, Fuck Me, Tim!" and "Sex Comes, Sex Goes." Rather, All About My Mother is Almodvar's exploration of the way "women faked, lied, hid and that way allowed life to flow and develop." This attempt to tackle the manipulation of reality won Almodvar the Best Director prize at Cannes...

Perhaps President Clinton deserves some of the blame. After all, his administration did all that it could to meld a president's personal life with his duties in office. The President's adultery and lying introduced Americans to a sordid life behind a Presidential faade, and now we can't stop prying for similar excitement...

Republicans may have rejected the test-ban treaty, as you argue, because they cannot shake Clinton on domestic issues but they can successfully challenge him on relatively less important (from an American perspective) foreign policy issues. Big mistake. This treaty mattered a lot more than some sordid affair for which the Republican right failed to exact retribution. Whereas a week ago the cocaine allegations were relegated primarily to supermarket rags, the new revelations about Hatfield allow the general media to pounce on the more sordid aspects of "Fortunate Son." The New York Times, for example, admitted to receiving an advance copy of the book but decided against printing the cocaine story because they "spent several days looking for evidence that might corroborate Hatfield's account." They came up short, and dropped the story ? until now. Will...

Members of Congress have a pretty extensive exposure to all things sordid, but most of them were probably not prepared for what they heard and saw this week. On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee?s crime panel heard testimony from animal rights activists pushing for criminal penalties for traffickers of animal "squish" or "crush" movies. According to the Associated Press, the films, which feature the graphic torture and death of animals, are part of what one witness called a multimillion-dollar, worldwide industry. "It?s time to stop this windfall," said Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Ca.), the sponsor...
