...Fowler's concern about chaos could be prophetic. New Hampshire is sore, and there's been speculation that the state might move its primary up. A state law requires that New Hampshire's vote must take place seven days before a "similar election." But it's not clear what action the state might take - or what other states, or the DNC, might do in response. "I don't think it can be controlled," says Fowler. "I think other states are going to move their votes at their discretion, and I think it's going to be a mess...

...Maybe I hear, and feel, something different in Allyson. The Internet Movie Database Obit describes her as having a "raspy voice," and David Thomson, that most gifted of biographical sketch artists, refers to "her petite, sore-throated charm." To my ear, Allyson was a crooner, her voice a salve to her male co-stars' belligerence, grudges or indecision. ...without being any less of an American myself, the piggishness of us all. Clearly, there's going to be a global crisis in the amount of petroleum in the world. There's only so much, and there are more people wanting it. No wonder the Third World is sore at us. We're spending the limited reserves of resources about as fast as we can. Our solution is to waste it all and then punt and see what we might do next. It's very easy to sort of look back and think that things were better then, that things...
