Over the years, as the trusted and all-knowing head of the bookkeeping department, Mamie Averill created a sort of personal bank balance for herself, auditors discovered, by under-recording receipts in the company ledgers. Never for a moment lacking in inspiration, the symphony is a product of Haydn's thirties, a tempestuous, tragic utterance that ought to give new ideas about this composer to those unfamiliar with his early work.
