While comedies experiment a bit, crime dramas this season have the smell of used goods. Among veteran performers starring in new series are William Conrad as a wily district attorney in Jake and the Fatman, Paul Sorvino as a police- department p.r. man who returns to the streets in The Oldest Rookie, Jerry Orbach as a private eye in The Law and Harry McGraw, and Dale Robertson as a crime-solving Texas billionaire in J.J. Starbuck. Only Robertson seems to be truly enjoying the work. NBC's Private Eye, created by Anthony Yerkovich (Miami Vice), is hipper but not much...

Dusa (Mira Sorvino) is a mod mom who eulogizes the virtues of motherhood. By playing Dusa with false sincerity, Sorvino does not make her a credible character. The fourth woman, Fish (Heather Gunn), is a journalist-activist-feminist and the most ideologically optimistic woman of the bunch--often hopeful to the point of idiocy. Gunn's overstudied performance does little to help us sympathize with...

Surviving is even more damning in its indictment of the suicidal teen-agers' parents. Lonnie's folks (Marsha Mason and Paul Sorvino) offer little understanding or support for their daughter after an earlier attempt to kill herself. Rick's father (Len Cariou) puts undue pressure on the boy to do well in school; his mother (Ellen Burstyn) is obliviously wrapped up in her work with foreign-exchange students. In the scope and ferocity of its family suffering, Surviving approaches the proportions of a Greek tragedy. Unfortunately, it lapses into bathos in the final hour, as the bereaved parents wade through...

When the movie begins, George Sitkowski (Bruce Dern) is the mayor of Scranton, running for reelection. James Daily (Stacy Keach), a junior high school principal, manages his former teammate's campaign, largely financed by Phil Ramono (Paul Sorvino), an Italian businessman whose strip-mining company thrives on city leases. Tom Daily (Martin Sheen), James's younger brother, returns from a mysterious absence to join the others and Coach Delaney (Robert Mitchum). "It's amazing." Tom comments, "nothing's really changed here. Nothing. "Of course, Tom's comment overlooks the closing of his old high school; the dark desertion...
