Jobs is working hard to make Pixar a brand name as powerful as Disney's. Michael Eisner, head of Disney, says he doesn't even think of the two companies as separate anymore. "We are joined at the hip, at the computer and at the soul," he told TIME. "Pixar's success is not a fluke. One thing I always think is essential is enthusiasm, and Steve Jobs is massively enthusiastic. Jobs' bravado is his charm. He's a serious businessman, but he's out there with his charisma. It's fun to be with...

...Other ideas, such as church-based programs that ask engaged couples to fill out marital "inventories," seemed promisingly pragmatic. The present is always struggling against the past. Much as the laid-back breakups of 20 years ago arose from the hard-bitten marriages of an earlier time, the current soul searching about divorce owes its existence to the hang-loose '70s. Virtually self-taught until age 21, Richter treated the piano like a soul mate, listening for the romance of Schumann or the fury of Beethoven. Perhaps he could not match Horowitz's brilliance or Rubinstein's panache, but showmanship was never paramount to him. "I don't consider the public," he told TIME. "My only interest is my approaching encounter with the composer...

...Picture Perfect," unlike "My Best Friend's Wedding," plays by the rules of conventional romantic comedy--giving it a generic, by-the-numbers feel. Kate's soul-searching and self-discovery are formulaic, and Aniston's too lightweight an actor for anything more. Kate superficially faces the same sort of work vs. love conflict as Michelle Pfeiffer's character in "One Fine Day." But here the conflict just doesn't seem particularly important or convincing; and her parallel moment of epiphany and instant morality again feels scripted. (Pfeiffer, of course, had the enormous help of an especially cute kid peering...
