...stump. There is little human contact, few town meetings or door-to-door work; there are simply too many doors. The prevailing wisdom among consultants is that you run in California by raising a lot of money and putting it all on television. The public has reacted to these soulless exercises with disdainful apathy; Californians tend to be more interested when the state's nutty kernel of political extremists put some hot-button initiative-about race, immigration or taxes, inevitably-on the ballot. Indeed, there is a weird karmic genius to the current electoral gimmick, the movement to recall Governor...
...designed, efficient, world-class facility. Inside it is everything Kai Tak wasn't?spacious, airy and, with an inventive use of natural light, a little too bright for some when the morning sun catches those check-in desks. But it's also like so many international airports nowadays: somewhat soulless and homogenized. You could be in Schipol or Singapore. It's hard to cultivate warmth for a decade that you're portraying as soulless and lame, especially if your characters are equally empty. There's easy nostalgia (remember Dynasty? remember "Where's the beef"?), and there's getting a decade's spirit (remember the awkward attempts to combine the social liberties of the '70s with the social conservatism of the '50s?). That '70s Show...
