This topsy-turvy theme of belief triumphing over death runs through all American literature, from Bradford to Hemingway. It is the American's consolation that if he fails with his vision, he can persist in his belief. Perhaps these tendencies sound old and no longer applicable. Well, in a sense the Jonestown tale was sketched out a century ago. Consider Moby Dick: Is not there some deep similarity between Jones and Ahab? Pillinger staged this production as a "labor of love," but apparently his fixation upon the sound of the script blinded him to its potential for a spirited treatment. Fry's prose, though too densely written to be believable, is loaded with clever puns which are here denied the emphasis needed to make them funny. The director's love of the play also led him to slight other important elements such as consistent character development, blocking and technical competence. ...usually understated. In the lyrical slow movement this clarity was especially evident. Here Peter Lurye managed the ensemble and the balance between the soloist and his orchestra successfully and the overall effect was quite enchanting. Unfortunately, Lurye did not always restrain his musicians sufficiently. They occasionally covered the sound of the bassoon, which with its low pitch and delicate tone was all too vulnerable to such attacks. Despite this serious problem, Sogg stole the show in the end, and had to return to the stage several times to acknowledge the enthusiastic and well-deserved applause...

What she's got, most prominently, is a first-rate set of pipes, a ringing, theatrical voice that is locked in continual combat with the layered sound and dunce-cap lyrics of disco. With one platinum and five gold albums, Summer, 29, is the one incontestable star to emerge from the disco demimonde. Love to Love You Baby became a hit in the days when discos were not sprouting on every block, but were stashed in the closet along with the gay subculture from which they sprang...
