...sleek, naked towers to see some Kenneth Anger films. Anger is best known for Fireworks, a gay dream film featuring him projecting a roman candle from his fly and lighting it. Scorpio Rising (1963), a later work, is a slightly premature pop culture lick featuring motorcycles, an overripe rock soundtrack, and genitals. The genitals are only there for a couple of frames. But the audience at M.I.T. was very fond of them. Especially a group of aging motorcyclists sitting next...

...little authenticity, there are occasional film clips from a 1944 cameraman who was infinitely more skillful than the one used last year. The clips serve to point out how much wiser it would have been to make Paris in documentary form--for television. The soundtrack is perhaps second only to Muzak in its exasperating qualities. There is, in short, absolutely nothing favorable one can say about this movie except that it is, in its own way, monumental. What it doesn't do, and what a well-designed set and clever soundtrack can never do, is make you believe it. Though the film is largely shot from the girl's viewpoint, we share her imagination and not, alas, her thoughts. The only sense of breakdown stems from her increasingly lurid hallucinations: walls turn to putty or open in great cracks; hands poke through to feel her breasts, and rapists wait patiently in her bed. Photographed in deep shadow, often with a swinging camera, such scenes look old-fashioned and crude. Films have developed more sensitive means of conveying...

Then there is one LP, four single records and soundtrack albums from the films (Girl Happy was No. 15 on last week's Variety Bestselling LPs), which bring in about as much again. In addition to his salary, he also gets 50% of the movie profits, and since not one of his 17 pictures has ever lost money (he is the No. 6 box-office attraction in the U.S., No. 4 in Britain), that 50% on old and current films is an easy $1,000,000 more...
