Recently, I found myself arguing with a friend over the merits of John Williams, the composer of numerous film soundtracks including the upcoming Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. My friend was accusing Williams of being a shameless sell-out, a hack who borrows from a hundred other works, including his own soundtracks on occasion. The Star Wars soundtracks steal voluminously from Holst and Wagner, as well as Stravinsky; the soundtrack for JAWS is an amalgam of numerous traditional sea themes from dozens of sources. But while I attempted to make a comparison of Williams' use of so many different sources...

...know a bit about through association, but that just won't cut it in a full-blown novel. Though there is something admirable about Rushdie's intentions in The Ground Beneath Her Feet, it fails to fufill its tremendous potential. Perhaps we should reserve judgement until we hear the soundtrack, though. Music can make all the difference in the world...

Maki Nomiya and Yasuharu Konishi blend and blush an all-Japanese soundtrack to the imaginary lifestyle of the international playboy/girl set. "Rolls Royce" is experimentally clever but strung on an annoying shrill that detracts from adorable bubbletunes like "La Depression," "Playboy Playgirl" and "A New Song." More schnazzy than riding a carpeted, mirrored elevator to heaven with Audrey's cosmopolitan in your...

...indie music. Laugh all you want, but I listen to the Little Shop of Horrors soundtrack and Barenaked Ladies. Yet the idea of Australian college indie music intrigues me. I expected Flugelhorn Music's new compilation New Noize #1 to stimulate me culturally, not aesthetically. The opposite happened. Aside from a passing reference to frying UV rays (the ozone is thinning Down Under) and an occasional Aussie accent, I could easily mistake these songs as American. The five bands represented here sound very similar--forceful, loud vocals offset by catchy drum and guitar. There's no refined philosophical system being...
