Perhaps Tesich and director John Badham tried a little too hard to reach; the younger set in this film. The soundtrack is composed of insipid, topical songs that should have been replaced by something with a little guts, like "Carmen" or "Georgia," even at the risk of not being able to sell the record to youngsters. The focus on the younger generation is stronger than in other Tesich films, with middle age characters seldom making any appearence except in two dimensional form. This gives the film the surreal aspect of other movies aimed at teens. After all, the whole world...
...case, it's a nearly flawless production. The role of Joel calls for the acting talent of a foot-long hot dog, and Cruise, who has yet to star in another successful film, only barely disappoints. Beautifully filmed and with a gradually endearing Tangerine Dream soundtrack, it's the most graceful teen satire in years...
Aaron's direction is so unimaginative and deliberate that one gets the feeling that Maxie is a television sitcom. In fact, there are awkward pauses after many jokes, as if Aaron was expecting a laugh track to be put in. Even the soundtrack sounds like something from TV, resembling the Mary Tyler Moore theme when the mood is happy, and the MASH theme when it is bittersweet...
