During my first days in Russia, I headed for the stalovaya or Russian style cafeteria (9 rubles for soup and meat pie). The food's edible and I knew I still had a stash of granola bars for emergencies, like lunch. I was going to live like the Russians, I told myself. I was going to grab food when I saw it. When you see any-thing that looks (and smells) edible in Russia, you buy it. It won't be there tomorrow. Or the next...
...Cabinet not to get entangled in bureaucratic details. "Who is going to bury the dead?" asked Eisenhower. "Where would one find the tools? The organization to do it? We must not assume that we are going to handle these problems with calmness." Later he observed, "We will be running soup kitchens -- we are going to be taking care of a completely bewildered population." He feared anarchy. Perot agreed to work on two large, difficult accounts -- including Southwestern -- while Campbell would take the rest. Perot told his boss that he should not split the Southwestern commission with Campbell because he had done all the work. In response, Campbell argued that Perot didn...
...deranged Old Yeller (I'm referring to the pre-rabies Yeller of course) has done one too many "fire hydrant" jokes for my tastes, but he's weird enough to like. The strip alternates between one shot gags and storylines, the one shot gags often being funnier. A recent "Soup of the Day joke" involving some confusion between they day (Wednesday) and the soup, was stupid, but funny, which is perhaps a good way to summarize the strip...
