Federal District Court Judge Homer Thornberry was one man who profoundly sympathized with Judge Clement Haynsworth after the Senate rejected the South Carolinian for the Supreme Court. In a sense, Thornberry had been there himself. Lyndon Johnson nominated him to replace Justice Abe Fortas on the theory that Fortas would be moving up to Chief Justice on Earl Warren's retirement. Thornberry is depressed by Haynsworth's rejection. "Haynsworth was unacceptable because he is a conservative Southerner," Thornberry tells friends in Texas, "not because he's unethical." Then he adds: "The fight is gone from the Senate...
...announcement will provoke no joy in the White House. To ensure his re-election in 1972, President Nixon wants to hold those Southern states that supported him in 1968 and pick up at least two of the five that supported Wallace. His Southern strategy is aimed at convincing the South's conservatives that the Republican Party offers them permanent shelter. It is designed also to deny Democrats the sure votes they once could count on in Dixie. Wallace's re-emergence could once again cost Nixon the electoral votes of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. It could also force...
...first Chinese official to make a statement on Richard Nixon's major address on Viet Nam. His line at the time was a tough one. He charged that "U.S. imperialism will never abandon its criminal aim of vainly trying to perpetuate its forcible occupation of South Viet Nam." He also condemned the Middle East policies of both the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The two nations, said Li, are trying to "intimidate, bribe, deceive and divide the Arab countries...
...shadowy war between Laotian government forces and Communist Pathet Lao guerrillas, China has so far stayed clear of the actual fighting. Peking, however, has launched a different sort of invasion against its diminutive neighbor to the south-one that may prove to be every bit as troublesome. Last year some 3,000 Chinese road builders moved across the border of China's Yunnan province into northern Laos. By the time the monsoon rains began last spring, the Chinese had pushed a gravel-topped all-weather road 55 miles south as far as Muong Sai, a town on an important...
Mean Northeasterners. Recalling stereotypical apologies for the Ole South, Russell Baker admitted that it is "true, as the Nixon Republicans assert, that the Northeast is not representative of the U.S." But "even the meanest Northeasterner has nothing against the conservative who knows his place. Many Northeasterners, in fact, grew up in the care of conservative mammies. Many also had conservative daddies." What's more, he added, we "eat at the same table with them...
