Huang Lu knew it wouldn't be easy to find a job when she graduated from college last month. But when the 21-year-old from Anhui province in southeastern China started going to employment fairs and sending out résumés seven months ago, she didn't expect the job market would be quite so inhospitable. "I've had eight interviews so far," says Huang, an international-trade graduate of Anhui University of Finance & Economics, "but I still don't have a decent offer. ...while foreign demonstrators have simply been sent out of the country, domestic activists face much harsher scrutiny. Human Rights Watch says there have been at least five cases of the authorities blocking Chinese citizens from staging protests during the Games. A legal activist from southeastern Fujian province was arrested on Aug. 11 after applying to protest corruption and official abuses of power in Beijing. Over the past few weeks President Karzai has vigorously protested such events of civilian casualties - on July 6 NATO forces bombed a wedding party in southeastern Afghanistan by mistake, killing 47. But today's lunch was neither the time nor the place to focus on civilian casualties, says Hamidzada, pointing out that the Senator's visit was more of an introduction to the country, and that such specific policy issues should be reserved for U.S. leaders...

Despite the regular military checkpoints along the road from Basra to Al-Faw, Iraqi military commanders in Basra say the stretch of border at Iraq's southeastern tip is still the most problematic, especially for the more benign, low-profit trade in illegal gasoline. At Al-Faw's small army base, nearly 30 butane gas canisters sit in the back of a truck, which the soldiers say was confiscated that morning. "They filled [the canisters] with diesel fuel for cars and they were taking it to fishermen to sell on the black market," says Al-Faw military commander Colonel Kareem...
