...begun in 1994 under the slogan Back to Sleep. But not everyone has got the message. Those who are still more likely to place their infants on their stomachs include mothers ages 20 to 29, African Americans in the inner city and families who live in Middle Atlantic or Southern states. Note to the civic-minded: Willinger is looking for volunteers who can help get the word out to any of these communities...

Last winter the southern California rap-metal quintet Limp Bizkit was just another scuffling young band that had probably spent too much time listening to its Beastie Boys and Rage Against the Machine albums. I found the condescending manner of some Dalton residents outrageous. You quoted an elderly Southern gentleman as saying, "I know these [Mexican] children are here to stay--as butchers, Realtors, car salesmen, physicians." Torrential rains in Southeast Asia...

...Jesus Christ, has a welcome modesty and warmth, a far cry from the chilly Gothic pretensions of Phantom and Sunset Boulevard. The setting has been shifted from northern England to 1950s Louisiana, which allows the mostly British cast--particularly the children--to offer up some of the weirdest Southern accents ever heard on stage. Yet the clash of Bible Belt bigotry and Elvis-era rebellion provides a credible framework for the parable about an outcast's redemption, and Whistle Down the Wind is more emotionally accessible and musically alive than anything Lloyd Webber has done in a long while...
