...assets of the Southern Consumers Cooperative, a Negro self-help agency launched on a shoestring in Louisiana, have risen from $25,000 to $200,000 in two years. Harlem's Freedom National Bank, which opened its doors in 1964 with an authentic black hero, Jackie Robinson, as chairman of the board, makes $25.2 million available for loans to Negroes, whom white-managed financial institutions systematically reject as bad risks. Economic status is only one of many new goals. The Negro theater, yesterday nothing more than a dream, is a flourishing reality today, with black companies and stages all over...
Dwarfed by racist neighbors on one side and nationalistic independent states on the other, Malawi lies in the extreme Southern end of the Great Rift Valley which stretches North and South almost the entire length of the continent. As a land-locked nation, it must depend on its good relations with surrounding states to insure overland trans-shipment to the sea. There-in lies Malawi's greatest problem, and President Banda's response to such dependence has embroiled a formerly little-known country in a major struggle...

Take a hypothetical attempt to measure the education of southern Negroes by asking if they have encyclopedias. A yes response could mean a high literacy; it could mean encyclopedias are status symbols, or local salesmen are on the ball...
...youth in France, I've come to expect a warm ocean as a natural right, and I think no one has an excuse for living in New England. We professors who enjoy Mediterranean landscapes--and there are many of us--should petition Harvard to buy us a farm in southern France when we retire...
