Just as our news coverage provides for the dissemination of important information into the community, our ads provide an important opportunity for the community to gain a public voice. Any individual, organization or corporation can choose to purchase space in this newspaper to express an opinion. Barring libelous or inciteful material, we should print it. Censorship of news would not be tolerated. Censorship of ads would set just as dangerous a precedent...

WHILE we refuse to contribute to Lorenzo's destruction of the machinists' union ourselves, we would argue that Eastern has the right to sell its commodity in someone else's advertisement space. In addition, we would welcome Eastern's political opinions on our editorial page. But we don't want Lorenzo's business, we don't want his money and we don't want to be accomplices to his tactics by having his product on our ad pages...

Advertising speech is not "free"--ads cost money and not every group can afford them. In that respect, all newspapers are complicitous by allowing their space to be filled by those who can afford...
