Last week Defense Secretary Harold Brown confirmed what defense experts have long suspected: the Soviets have developed a "hunter-killer" satellite, straight from Star Wars, that can track down orbiting U.S. spacecraft - and wipe them out. Said Brown: "The Soviets have an operational capability" to destroy "some" American satellites and have thus raised at least the possibility of a Soviet-U.S. space war. Added Brown: "That is somewhat troublesome...
...attempted a huge step toward a distant planet and the interstellar space beyond it last week-but not without some unexpected difficulty. At Florida's Kennedy Space Center, an 1,800-pound spacecraft known as Voyager 2 was launched atop a Titan-Centaur rocket and aimed at Jupiter, 579 million miles and nearly two years away. Voyager 2 was hardly aloft, however, before it reported a malfunction in the boom that carries a key package of TV cameras and scientific instruments...
...boom extended after lift-off on schedule, but apparently failed to lock. That complicated the mission and cast an initial pall over an impressive $500 million program. Voyager 2 is to be followed on Sept. 1 by Voyager 1, a similar spacecraft so numbered because it will reach Jupiter four months earlier than Voyager 2 on a different trajectory...

Finally, it is unlikely that Superman and his lady love would even stay in earth orbit at the speed required for their 90-sec. trip round the world. After all, spacecraft orbit the earth at 24,000 m.p.h. Heaven only knows where Superman and Lois Lane would end up after attaining 1 million m.p.h...
...evil to a pyrotechnic starburst signalling the end of the dark days in the universe. While the dogfight that leads into the last-ditch attack is a mite drawn out, the denouement amply compensates for any peccadillos of self-indulgence that Lucas commins as he films the dueling spacecraft...
