...moon's surface-not much higher than the altitude at which commercial jets fly over the earth. "We're getting so close," said Stafford, "all you have to do is put your tail wheel down and we're there." As the spacecraft headed back toward earth at week's end, Flight Director Milton Windier summed up the immediate import of the flight, which was designed to test out Snoopy's performance before an actual moon landing: "It's all downhill from here. I see nothing to constrain the launch of Apollo...
...less tiring preflight schedule. None suffered nausea caused by weightlessness, possibly because of in-flight head-movement exercises prescribed by the astronauts' physician, Dr. Charles Berry. For the first time since John Young smuggled a corned-beef sandwich aboard the Gemini 3 flight in 1965 and littered the spacecraft interior with crumbs, the astronauts were allowed a supply of bread. To withstand the pure-oxygen atmosphere, which quickly dries bread and makes it crumbly, the slices of white and rye bread had been flushed with nitrogen, a process that keeps them fresh for two weeks...
...reliable Solar Particle Alert Network (SPAN) to protect astronauts from the vagaries of the sun. SPAN consists of six observatories that monitor the sun 24 hours a day. During this week's Apollo flight, they will feed information into a space environment console in Houston's Manned Spacecraft Center, where physicists and medical men will keep a constant vigil. In addition, Pioneer, Vela and other patrolling satellites will report any changes in solar radiation. Should SPAN report a suspicious-looking flare during the Apollo mission at the same time the satellites signal a corresponding increase in high-energy...
Right on target, more than four months after leaving the earth, two Russian spacecraft last week plunged into the murky atmosphere of Venus. Both Venus 5 and Venus 6 had apparently stood up well under the rigors of their 217-million-mile trips. Each spacecraft successfully ejected an instrumented capsule that radioed back information while parachuting toward the Venusian surface. At week's end, however, both capsules appeared to have fallen victim to intense Venusian heat before making their landings on the planet's surface...
...original plans called for Apollo 11 astronauts to remain sealed inside their spacecraft until it was lifted to the deck of the recovery carrier. There, they would walk through a plastic tunnel running from the hatch of the spacecraft into a hermetically sealed van on the carrier deck. Following a similar transfer from the van to Houston's sealed Lunar Receiving Laboratory (TIME, Dec. 29, 1967), the astronauts were to continue under strict quarantine for a total of 21 days. Recently, however, NASA officials began to have second thoughts about the discomforts the astronauts would endure if they were...
