...ready for Part II of the space race. China moved closer to playing in the manned space flight game Sunday following a successful unmanned test flight of a spacecraft designed to carry passengers into Earth orbit. The Shenzhou, China's answer to the Apollo capsule, is based on the design of the Russian Soyuz, and the Russians are also helping to construct the life support system and to train the Chinese "taikonauts." China may be able to conduct a manned flight as early as next fall, and officials have even speculated about possibly sending someone to the moon within...

...wait a minute. Didn't we already do this 30 or 40 years ago? Is there any point to being the third country in space? Well, there's national pride, for one thing, and China can hardly reach superpower status if it doesn't have the accoutrements. ...minus 1. All dressed in futuristic silver space suits, lu Cont walked out with Jo Reynolds, his good-looking blonde guitarist and proceeded to launch into a robotic dance. Perhaps it would be better described as a winking, ironic take on dancing: efforts to banish thoughts of that Volkswagen commercial where the guys dance to Styx's "Mr Roboto"(or my actual efforts in to do the same dance in the '80s) failed. In any case, it was the start of a show, all right. Lu Cont and Reynolds had chemistry and were having a laugh camping it up, shrugging...

...release of Burton's next film, and his return to directing. Ed Wood told the story of Hollywood's most famous bad director (played by Johnny Depp), who, in the '50s, made a number of awful films, the epitome being the infamous Plan 9 From Outer Space. The film handles Wood's story delicately, never mocking the character but rather focusing on the earnestness that is at the heart of Wood's "best" work...
