Though he said before the election results were finalized that he had not yet considered how much longer he would like to be on the council, Reeves says he plans to do everything he can to help issues like open space and rent control during this term...
...covering more and more of the planet with our cities, farms and waste, we have jeopardized other top predators that need space as well. Tigers and panthers are being squeezed out and may not last the coming century. We, at least, have the flexibility--the omnivorous stomach and creative brain--to adapt. We can do it by moving down the food chain: eating foods that use less water and land, and that pollute far less, than cows and pigs do. In the long run, we can lose our memory of eating animals, and we will discover the intrinsic satisfactions...
Here's what we know. Since sunlight is always falling on the earth, the laws of physics decree that the planet has to radiate the same amount of energy back into space to keep the books balanced. The earth does this by sending infrared radiation out through the atmosphere, where an array of molecules (the best known is carbon dioxide) form a kind of blanket, holding outgoing radiation for a while and warming the surface. The molecules are similar to the glass in a greenhouse, which is why the warming process is called the greenhouse effect...
...being fat. It probably will. But I do dream of a time when we can all accept ourselves and one another. Maybe by 2025 we will have evolved into a supercool, supercaring superpower where all shapes and sizes can be regarded as sexy and beautiful. Where big women share space on billboards next to waifs and we embrace a progressive pansexuality. With advances in genetic engineering and antidepressants, maybe we'll all look and feel exactly the same. Wouldn't that be great? The Stepford Planet...
...that happens, Europe will get very cold. Rome is, after all, at the same latitude as Chicago, and Paris is about as far north as North Dakota. More snow will fall, and the bright snow cover will reflect more of the sun's energy back into space, making life even chillier. Beyond that, the Gulf Stream is tied into other ocean currents, and shutting it down could rearrange things in a way that would cause less overall evaporation. Because atmospheric H20 is an important greenhouse gas, its loss would mean even more dramatic cooling--a total of perhaps as much...
