The narrator is a square professor who, after a visit to the unbelievably benighted residents of one-dimensional Lineland, is introduced to Spaceland by a Sphere. With a great effort, he masters the conception of a Figure moving "up-ward, not northward" out of its plane. Ironically, he cannot persuade the Sphere that perhaps there are yet other dimensions, to be entered by solids by some motion unfamiliar to them...
