...mass becomes infinitely dense, yet occupies no space. Its gravitational pull becomes so intense that no light or other radiation can escape from it. Thus the star cannot be detected by conventional observations. It becomes a black hole, or as Cameron calls it, a "collapsar." If a star-crossed spaceship ever strayed close enough to such a cosmic abyss, it would be drawn immediately into it and vanish completely from sight...
Basic concepts are taught in a classroom brainstorming session called "Rescue in Space." The schoolchildren divide into two groups: eight astronauts going to Mars in two spaceships, plus ground-control crews responsible for the ships' air, water, food and living space. Once on Mars, one spacecraft breaks down. Given certain limitations, which the teacher reads from the kit's list, the challenge is to create and debate practical ways of bringing all the astronauts safely back in the closed ecological system of a single cramped spaceship...

...middle of the night, electrically controlled garage doors in a number of Western states suddenly begin to open and close. At Houston's Manned Spacecraft Center, an outburst of strange signals starts disrupting communications with an orbiting Gemini spaceship. High above the Gulf of Mexico, the navigational gear of a jetliner bound for Miami mysteriously indicates that the plane is on a course for Cuba. Is a modern-day poltergeist on the loose? Not really. These baffling occurrences are, in fact, examples of a serious problem of the Electronic Age. As ever larger numbers of electronic gadgets come into...

Its probable mission was to land on the lunar surface, scoop up some soil and beat the Americans back to earth with the first samples of moon material. Luna 15 never achieved that ambitious goal. Several hours after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first mortals to step onto the moon, the Soviet spaceship dropped out of lunar orbit, apparently crashed and was never heard from again...
