Anticipating President Kennedy's tumultuous West Berlin reception, Nikita Khrushchev hastily arranged a trip of his own. He decided to go to East Berlin, ostensibly to celebrate the 70th birthday of East Germany's spade-bearded Communist Boss Walter Ulbricht.
