...Labor Party symbol is made up of three elements: the spade and pen, representing workers of both the hand and the brain, linked by the torch. The symbol came into being in 1918, following the formation of a new party constitution, and is thought to have been designed by Jimmie Middleton, who was then general secretary of the party.
