...Church-run institutions. Amidst the fury, the inquiry's chairman, Justice Mary Laffoy, announced her resignation Tuesday. The commission is investigating 1,800 cases of alleged abuse that span six decades. Education Minister Noel Dempsey defended the decision to change the inquiry's remit, saying that at its current rate of progress, it would run up legal costs of $220 million and take up to 10 years to publish its findings.
