RICHARD HAASS After three years, my answer would be no, although any judgment at this point is necessarily an interim one. The war has absorbed a tremendous amount of U.S. military capacity, the result being that the U.S. has far less spare or available capacity to use in the active sense or to exploit in the diplomatic sense. It has weakened our position against both North Korea and Iran. It has exacerbated U.S. fiscal problems. The war has also contributed to the world's alienation from the U.S. and made it more difficult to galvanize international support for U.S. policy...
...practically, the dialogues often drag on a bit long because of the overacting, and it ends up making the opera a great deal longer than it needs to be. Secondly, the cast invokes very little audience compassion for the characters, most of whom deserve at least a little. The spare set and lack of an overall visual theme hinders the production a little bit. There is a noticeable lack of atmosphere in most of the sets, but the colorful lighting and effective use of the rickety, dense scaffolding that surrounds the oddly placed stage usually make up for it. However...
...question, the husbanding contract provides the potential for mischief. Husbanding agents arrange everything from fuel to spare parts to fresh vegetables for vessels at ports of call. More critically, they often provide security, like erecting concrete barriers and what the military calls ?force protection.? Husbanding agents often learn weeks in advance of a ship?s schedule so as to be prepared when the vessel arrives, information that the Navy keeps closely guarded since it could be invaluable in the hands of terrorists. The suicide bombing of the Cole, for instance, occurred less than three hours after the ship had completed...
...tempered pace; the songs take their time, but the process is by no means leisurely. Instead, tension builds as the sound expands, often reaching pitches of dizzying intensity. “Auto Rock,” the album’s opener, constructs a steady crescendo around a spare piano melody, adding fuzzy distortion and a heavy, insistent beat. The result may be melodramatic, but it’s also nothing less than beautiful...
Vocals, as always, are spare in this album. When Mogwai do decide to incorporate their voices into a song, the vocals blend right into the texture of the instrumental fabric, becoming another part of the ambience. Even as the individual elements of the music may merge together, however, the structure of the songs themselves is never indistinct. The rhythm and the drive are always in the forefront, pushing the song forward, holding us in suspense for the next big crest of sound...
