Director Sellars and set designer Gary Lovesky have created a visually breathtaking production--they dragged 30 live birch trees from the Harvard Forest and ringed them around the spare, vast, white-draped stage. Huge birches and the bare exposed Loeb stage dwarf the actors and frame Sellar's epic interpretation. The Loeb production emphasizes the tableaux over the characters, but it does so with a brilliance in staging that brings out Chekhov's geometry and starkly, pictorially dramatizes the characters' relationship to each other. The operatic staging also serves to divorce the characters from the world outside the Prozorov mansion...

...writing is spare but flowing, with no set tense. Common nouns are idiomatic; a digs-with-mouth is a badger and a cloud-bird is an eagle. Mahto terms appear regularly, pta for buffalo and itancan for leader. And although the style at first seems ponderous and tedious, it soon becomes soothing. Like the book, it is steady and predictable. Also like the book, however, it is not for everyone...

...start selling its new compact X cars. Departing from the secrecy that surrounds most new models in Detroit, GM added to the hype by allowing plenty of tantalizing pre-introductory glimpses of these autos. Almost everything in them, from axles to windshields, has been redesigned to save weight and spare gas, and the company has poured $2.5 billion into the project so far. The stubby X car will replace four of GM's existing compact models; it will be sold by four GM divisions, each of which will give it a slightly different body, as well as a different...

Things do not appear to be taking a turn for the better. The squad will graduate its two best forwards (George Hughes and Purdy), its second best defenseman (Trainor), and veteran spare parts like Steve Andrews, Murray Dea, John Dunderdale, John Cochrane, and Millen. In addition, Jack Hughes, quite possibly the best defenseman in the East, will probably make the Olympic team and pass up his final year of eligibility. These are cavities that refurbished Watson Rink and normal practice hours cannot hope to fill...

...permitted only 75 sq. ft. of living space per person-roughly the recommended allowance for prisoners in U.S. federal penitentiaries. Factory hands must work six days a week, and spend the seventh at political meetings or on "volunteer" construction projects. Privately owned automobiles are all but nonexistent, and spare parts for bicycles are in short supply. "There is a great deal of unhappiness," says a Hanoi-based diplomat. "People are starting to complain privately. One of the whispered questions heard most often is an ironic one: 'What the hell are we doing in Cambodia...
